What is Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a type of therapy that uses hypnosis—a state of focused attention and increased responsiveness to suggestion—to help someone work on particular symptoms, habits, or emotional difficulties.
During a session, a trained practitioner typically helps you become deeply relaxed and focused, then uses guided imagery or therapeutic suggestions related to your goal. You generally remain conscious and aware, and hypnosis doesn't mean losing control or being forced to do something against your will.
Hypnotherapy has been studied for issues such as pain management, anxiety and stress, certain phobias, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and changing some habits. How well it works varies by condition and by person, and it's usually considered a complementary approach rather than a replacement for appropriate medical or psychological treatment.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
In everyday life, we often operate through familiar patterns of thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behaviours. Some of these patterns develop through past experiences and may continue automatically, even when they are no longer helpful.
During hypnotherapy, the therapist helps you enter a deeply focused and relaxed state. In this state, attention can become more absorbed in internal experiences such as thoughts, emotions, memories, imagery, and bodily sensations. Therapeutic suggestions, visualization, and other interventions may then be used to support new ways of relating to these experiences.
Rather than “controlling the mind,” hypnotherapy can be understood as a way of creating conditions for focused therapeutic exploration and learning.
What can Hypnotherapy help with?
Hypnotherapy may be used on its own or alongside psychotherapy and other forms of care to support a range of emotional, behavioural, relational, and mind-body concerns.
Mental & Emotional Well-Being
Hypnotherapy may support individuals experiencing chronic stress, anxiety, low mood, panic, sleep difficulties, fatigue, and stress-related physical symptoms. It can also help clients develop greater relaxation, emotional regulation, and awareness of the connection between mind and body.
Confidence, Habits & Behavioural Patterns
Hypnotherapy can be used to explore and shift automatic beliefs, reactions, and behavioural patterns that may be difficult to change through conscious effort alone. Areas of focus may include:
Confidence and self-esteem
Imposter syndrome
Public speaking and performance
Fears and phobias
Smoking, alcohol use, and other habits
Beliefs and emotional patterns related to money
Performance and goal achievement
Trauma & Relationship Patterns
When appropriately integrated into trauma-informed care, hypnotherapy may support work related to trauma and longstanding relational patterns, including:
PTSD and complex trauma
Recovery from emotionally or narcissistically abusive relationships
Repetitive or difficult relationship patterns
Sex, intimacy, and emotional connection
Identity, Grief & Life Transitions
Hypnotherapy may also provide a space to explore deeper questions related to identity, belonging, meaning, and change, including:
Grief and bereavement
Finding meaning and purpose
Major life transitions
Third Culture Individuals (TCIs), cultural identity, and acculturation
Mind-Body & Hormonal Transitions
Hypnotherapy may be used as a complementary approach to support the emotional, psychological, and stress-related experiences associated with:
PMS and PMDD
Perimenopause and menopause
Gastrointestinal concerns
Chronic pain and tension
Insomnia and other stress-related physical symptoms
Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical assessment or treatment. Physical symptoms and medical conditions should be appropriately evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider, and hypnotherapy can be incorporated as part of a broader, collaborative approach to well-being.
Benefits of Therapeutic Coaching
Clients who engage in therapeutic coaching often experience a wide range of benefits, including:
Increased self-awareness and emotional intelligence
Improved communication and relationship skills
Enhanced resilience and stress management abilities
Greater clarity and focus in setting and achieving goals
Deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose in life
What does hypnosis feel like?
There is no single experience of hypnosis. Some people describe feeling deeply relaxed, while others experience it simply as becoming very focused or absorbed.
You may have experienced similar states naturally—for example, becoming immersed in a book, meditation, music, creative activity, or driving a familiar route and realizing that your attention had become deeply absorbed.
You remain an active participant in the therapeutic process. You can speak, move, ask questions, or end the exercise at any time.
